Description: TCF Center, the hub of Detroit’s dynamic downtown and located on the Detroit River forming the international border between the U.S. and Canada, recently completed a $279 million renovation that transformed the venerable convention center into a modern, cutting edge, spectacular meeting and event venue with hi-tech and customer friendly amenities.
The centerpiece of the renovation was the creation of an 80-foot tall atrium overlooking the riverfront, adjacent to the spectacular 40,000 square foot Grand Riverview Ballroom. The primary feature of the Ballroom is an LED lighting system that allows certain lighting elements to be programmed to any color of the rainbow, adding a decorative touch to events at no additional cost. The Ballroom seats up to 3,500 theater style and 2,100 for banquets.
The amount of meeting and exhibit space under one roof allows TCF to host a wide array of events. In addition to the Ballroom, 93 meeting rooms provide 155,000 square feet of space, while five exhibit halls total 723,000 square feet, making TCF the 17th largest convention center in the country.
TCF’s formidable digital assets include informational monitors outside meeting rooms as well as large screen displays throughout the building for event information or sponsorship messaging. Outside, a 160-foot by 30-foot marquee promotes events, while a second LED sign made up of twin 60-foot by 30-foot marquees, can not only be used to promote events, but also offers events the opportunity to increase their event revenue via sponsor advertising opportunities.
A unique feature of TCF Center is a full scale video production studio located inside the building. The well-appointed studio allows building users access to the necessary equipment for live or pre-recorded broadcasting, web-casting or satellite transmission of their events to a global audience using TCF’s building-wide fiber infrastructure.
Free Wi-Fi is offered throughout TCF including exhibit halls and meeting rooms, with enough capacity to accommodate 30,000 simultaneous devices building-wide. Hard-wired drops can be made in any location, tapping into the 2,000 Mb (2 gigabyte) bandwidth available (10 gigabyte can be obtained with advance notice), a robust internet capacity that can handle even the most technology-laden events.
Events requiring nearby hotel rooms for their attendees have a multitude of choices of fine properties in various price categories. There are thousands of hotel rooms within walking distance, some as close as across the street.
Detroit has become a world-class meeting destination, offering a burgeoning restaurant scene, top-ranked airport, new developments (including a multi-million dollar entertainment district), a new light rail line, as well as arts and culture that are second to none.
Features: Audio Visual Services (in-house, but not exclusive), Bus Loading/Unloading, Catering, Decorating Services (offices in building, not exclusive), IT Lines - Free Wi-Fi, two Marquees, Pre-Function Space, Security (in-house, but not exclusive), Speaker Ready Room, Television/Production Studio
Guest Services: Free Wi-Fi, ATM, Coat Check, Food Court, Gift Shop, Parking, Taxi Cab Access.
Green/Environmental Initiatives: The TCF Center's commitment to environmental stewardship in our community is demonstrated by our continuous efforts to investigate, validate and implement new and innovative Green initiatives throughout the facility, and by our programs designed to educate our employees, vendors, customers, partners and visitors in the importance of the sustainability of our environment.
Basic sorting of waste, paper and cans/bottles (there are 50 recycle stations scattered throughout the building), as well as recycling of cardboard and pallets, is done on a daily basis. Also, kitchen waste is composted with unserved food distributed to shelters, a green roof has been installed on a portion of the building, an herb garden grows on the roof, there are bee hives on the roof (both herbs and honey produced are used by on-site caterer), a MoGo Bike Station (stations are solar powered)is on site and there are vinyl and electronic hardware recycling programs in place. The highly technical, computer controlled lighting and HVAC system provides optimum energy savings. Plus, light sensors in all meeting rooms automatically turn off lights in unoccupied rooms. The TCF Green Committee meets monthly to promote sustainability practices among all departments and in-house contractors.
All of this has resulted in TCF being one of only a handful of convention centers (we were the 9th) in North America to achieve the Green Meetings Industry Council certification, meeting their formidable standards.
