AIBTM Confirms Robust Lineup of Exhibitors for 2014

INDUSTRY ECONOMIC STRENGTH CONTRIBUTES TO EXHIBITOR PARTICIPATION

ORLANDO — The Americas Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition (AIBTM), a leading global exhibition for the U.S. meetings and events industry, has confirmed that major industry players have announced their participation at the 2014 show set to take place June 10th – 12th at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

According to AIBTM Exhibition Director, Michael Lyons, industry confidence coupled with strong exhibitor feedback on the business value of AIBTM is contributing to fervent exhibitor participation again this year.

Several new exhibitors will make their AIBTM debut in 2014 including: Universal Orlando Resort, Canon USA, Boulder Convention & Visitors Bureau, Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce, Digitell, Mobile Bay CVB, eventPower, Jumeirah Group, Loews Hotels & Resorts, Charleston South Carolina CVB, Hamburg Convention Bureau, St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Busan Metropolitan City and many more.

Among the returning exhibitors participating in AIBTM 2014 are: Bloomington MN Convention & Visitors Bureau, Choose Chicago, Visit Florida, Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts, Peninsula Hotels, Philippines, Sony Premium Incentives, Travizon Corporate Travel and Worldwide Travel & Cruise, and Dominican Republic Tourism Board.

“We are proud to support AIBTM, a great show that generates business,” said Daniel S. O’Neill, Vice President of Strategy and Sales of the Bloomington MN Convention & Visitors Bureau.? “Our twenty-minute appointments were filled throughout each day and we had successful discussions with meeting planners about choosing Bloomington for their next meeting or event. Congratulations to AIBTM and their continued success. See you in Orlando.”

Buyers can also expect to see several international exhibitors on the show floor who are aiming to capture an increased spend from domestic buyers pursuing meeting and events options in the global market.

“North America is the number one market for business visitor spend in England,” said Simon Gidman, Head of Business Visits and Events of VisitEngland. “It is essential that England establishes a strong presence in North America and continues to raise the profile of some of our leading events destinations, particularly those with direct access, such as Manchester and Birmingham. The AIBTM tradeshow provides an excellent platform to reach buyers from across North America.”

First time exhibitor, Hamburg Convention Bureau’s Thorsten Kausch, CEO , states: “By participating in AIBTM for the first time, our objective is to familiarize ourselves more with the United States’ meetings and events industry and also present Hamburg as a quality location for conventions and events within Germany. Beyond this, we would also like to take this chance to establish contacts with international event organizers and to bring international congresses and events to the city of Hamburg.”

Many returning exhibitors have also acknowledged confidence in improved industry spending and have therefore increased their booth size: Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotels, Hilton Worldwide, Sofitel Luxury Hotels, Los Angeles Convention Bureau & Tourism Board, Detroit Metro CVB, Hello DMC! and Panama.

Shasha Cruz, Representative Mid-Atlantic USA of Dominican Republic Tourism Board and returning exhibitor commented, “AIBTM is a fantastic opportunity to promote our destination not only nationally, but internationally through face-to face connections which is very important to doing business. Also, AIBTM is one of the most important trade events targeted to qualified meeting planners and the quality of the attendees is outstanding.”

“Post-show research last year indicated that 90% of our exhibitors felt that AIBTM delivered the right audience,” said Lyons. “Couple this with increased industry confidence and that’s why we are seeing and expecting a strong exhibitor turnout again this year.? Our continued focus on delivering high-level education and a quantifiable return on investment through targeted and relevant business connections are lining up to make AIBTM 2014 another very fruitful show year for exhibitors.”

National Team Brings Home FCC Honors

Youth Team Crowned Asian Pastry Cup Champion, Seniors; 2nd Runner-up in Pastry Art (National Cold Display)

Kuala Lumpur, 30 April 2014 ¬– The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s (the Centre) Chef de Partie, Tay Chee Siang and his team mates from the Academy of Pastry Arts Malaysia, Pastry Chef Tan Wei Loon and Executive Pastry Chef Chiam Ko Seen who was also team captain, made the country proud when their creativity and skills in pastry art trumped eight other national teams to win the Asian Pastry Cup 2014 at the Food & Hotel Asia Culinary Challenge (FCC) 2014 in Singapore earlier this month.

In the allotted eight hours, the youth chefs prepared two 1kg chocolate cakes, 20 plated desserts, one sugar showpiece and their pièce de résistance, a chocolate showpiece themed ‘Pandora Cage’ to win the judges’ votes and bring home not just the Asian Pastry Chef title but also the Best Plated Dessert award.

A take on Pinocchio who was locked in a cage by a bad circus boss and hopes someone will set him free and take him back to his happy life, Chef Tay explained ‘Pandora Cage’ represented Pinocchio, the white chocolate shell; the cage, the tasting panel; the person who opens the cage, and happiness is after tasting the dessert! “This is because, besides good flavour, emotional factors such as curiosity, surprise and happiness are important to driving customer satisfaction for a dessert. And in ‘Pandora Cage’, the mystery is only unveiled when the shell in opened.”

The Asian Pastry Cup served as the official competition to pre-select four Asian teams for the World Pastry Cup 2015 to be held in Lyon, France.

For Chef Tay, the Asian Pastry Cup win adds another notch to his belt. He took gold in the Cold Show category and silver in the Chocolate Showpiece and Dessert Challenge categories at the much-coveted Salon Culinaire Mondial 2013 and was part of the Centre’s ‘Most Outstanding Team in Culinary’ culinary team at the bi-annual Culinaire Malaysia 2013.

“I’m so proud to be able to play a part in bringing home the Asian Pastry Cup and honoured to be able to represent Asia in Lyon next year. Yes, it means more hard work but I’m ready for it and looking forward to the challenge,” beamed Tay.

In the quadrennial National Team Challenge which returned to the FCC this year, Malaysia took on nine international teams to emerge 2nd runner-up for Pastry Art (National Cold Display) with a 100 percent chocolate showpiece of edible kitchen utensils titled ‘Culinary Revolution’ while their effort in the Hot Cooking Category, a three-course European-themed entry with a Malaysian twist titled ‘Culinary Evolution’, won bronze. Lead and captained by the Centre’s Senior Sous Chef, Mohd Nor Musa, the six-man senior team infused local flavours and ingredients such as lemongrass, coconut and pandan to enhance their culinary presentations. The team was also awarded silver in the Cold Display category.

According to Chef Chern Chee Hong, President of Chefs Association Malaysia (CAM), the National Team Challenge provided an excellent occasion for the team to prepare for the Culinary World Cup 2014 which will be held from 20-28 November in Luxembourg.

The 15-strong national team’s participation in FCC 2014 is under the auspices of CAM and the Youth Chef Club Malaysia (YCCM).

IMEX America Marks Earth Day 2014 With 9% Improvement in APEX/ASTM Sustainable Event Compliance

The IMEX Group continues to demonstrate its commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and producing trade shows which minimize environmental impact by publishing its annual IMEX America Sustainability Report 2013.

At the same time IMEX is using Earth Day (April 22) to launch a short campaign reminding all participants and partners of the essential contribution they make each year to the reuse, recycling and reduction of waste and vital resources during IMEX in Frankfurt and IMEX America.

The new sustainability benchmarking report – compiled and audited by IMEX’s sustainability partners MeetGreen® – illustrates that the trade show’s overall compliance with the APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Event Standards improved by 9% in 2013, reaching a high of 72% (2013 target: 70%).
Significant reductions in energy and water usage combined with a 10% improvement in waste being sent to landfill, and a marked increase in composting rates, defined the show’s green performance for 2013. In addition 8,590 pounds of show materials were donated to local charities, mostly comprising signage and carpet. Innovative use of all the plastic carpet covers ensured these were donated to a local Las Vegas co-op for reuse as greenhouse enclosures.

Host partners, Sands Expo®, surpassed their 2012 achievements with a waste diversion rate of 90.32% which, when combined with the results from IMEX America’s host hotels The Venetian®|The Palazzo®, resulted in an overall diversion rate of 79.6%. This resulted in the 10% improvement in waste diversion from landfill compared to 2012. Despite increased attendance figures, overall water use was also reduced by 16%.

The Sustainability Report highlights several other notable achievements: 32% of all food served met the APEX/ASTM sustainability standard for food and beverage operations, and over $5,000 dollars were donated to three local charities which IMEX America has pledged to support over the long-term – Opportunity Village, the Shade Tree and Clean the World. Donations were raised through the innovative IMEX Badge Back program, which gives $1 for every used visitor badge dropped into a sponsored recycling bin. A generous donation from MeetGreen® also allowed IMEX to invite visitors to create hygiene kits from reusable toiletries, which resulted in over 700 kits being made and donated to the Shade Tree shelter for women, children and their pets.

The Venetian/Palazzo’s lobby display was designed to highlight their Eco 360 program and support IMEX America’s sustainability efforts.

The report also includes full transparency on areas for improvement at IMEX America 2014 and beyond. These include increasing sustainable food options; encouraging and enabling more of the show’s additional hosted buyer hotels to report on sustainability practices and reducing post-show waste on the floor from exhibitor booth materials.

Says Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group: “I’m really happy to share this report with other planners and peers in the meetings and events industry and to make our green efforts and results fully transparent to all. Every year and every show is different, and if there one’s lesson we’ve learned above all it’s that the communication and ‘championing’ of best environmental practice cannot stop. Every single individual in our complex supply chain needs to understand and act on our green objectives in order for us to keep on meeting or overtaking the previous year’s results. It takes constant vigilance, corporate commitment and caring at a personal level so Earth Day 2014 presents the perfect opportunity to thank everyone for doing their bit, and to encourage them to keep on helping, whether they plan to join us in Frankfurt or Las Vegas.”

Meetings industry professionals interested in taking part in the biennial IMEX Challenge, which is inviting volunteers to build a new healing garden at the Shade Tree on the weekend prior to IMEX America, can find out more and register at: http://www.imexamerica.com/challenge

More information on sustainability practices at IMEX America
IMEX and the MeetGreen® teams works with many organizations that help support and execute the show. The Sands Expo® and host hotels The Venetian®|The Palazzo® — with their innovative Sands Eco 360 Program– are key players. Other important stakeholders include IMEX’s general service contractor GES, transportation company Allied PRA; registration company Experient; AV provider Show Gear and others.

In addition, throughout the show IMEX asks hosted buyers, attendees and exhibitors to become part of the IMEX America ‘Green Team’ and show their support for sustainable meetings by wearing a green ribbon. In doing this they pledge to take certain green actions such as providing and asking for electronic materials vs. hard copies; building sustainable materials into their booths; finding out about the green options provided by destinations; attending at least one education session at the Sustainability Hub, and more.

City Sights, Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

In January, the Marriott Gaslamp Quarter, located in San Diego, expanded its Altitude Sky Lounge by adding a new indoor-outdoor venue called City Sights. Anny Rouillard, director of design at Stanford Hotels Corporation, the company that owns and operates the property, led the charge in converting a former fitness center into a sleek sky-high destination. Perched on the rooftop, 22 stories above street level, the new space allows guests to host sophisticated business meetings or intimate, year-round gatherings with a 360-degree look at San Diego’s most exciting sights. “We wanted this space to be multifunctional—to be a place for gathering where people could appreciate the beautiful view,” Rouillard says.

Flex Time
With modular chairs and a variety of cocktail tables, the furniture is flexible for a variety of applications. “The layout can be changed depending on the function,” Rouillard says. “We wanted people to be able to move around.”

Peekaboo
Because most of the walls in the space are neutral, Rouillard sought to create an accent wall. “The screen on the wall is a focal point,” she says. Made out of MDF, the cutout screen allows light to shine through for a whimsical effect.

Barfly
The corner bar, which attracts attention with up-lit bottles in the evening and posh stainless steel accents, can easily be hidden during daytime meetings by pulling down roller shades.

Mood Lighting
To transition the space from day to night, Rouillard and her team installed high-tech lighting that changes colors and intensity throughout the evening. “At night we have this fantastic light show that showcases different settings and different moods,” Rouillard says. “It gives the space a lot of energy.”
