ASAE, Association Forum Expanding Learning Opportunities for Chicago Associations

ASAE and Association Forum are collaborating to increase “in-person” educational offerings in the Chicago metro area, which is the second largest association market in the United States.

Expanding opportunities to enhance career development and meeting association community needs are a shared priority for both ASAE and Association Forum. The leaders established a collaboration framework that puts the association professional at the center, builds on the strengths of each organization’s programming, and reinforces their joint commitment to the future of associations.

ASAE Joins New Event Industry Leaders Coalition to Stop Sexual Harassment

ASAE is part of a new coalition that’s comprised of leaders and executives from organizations including: AWE, EIC, IAEE, IMEX, JMIC, MPI, PCMA and SITE. The group’s goal is to eradicate sexual harassment in the events industry and workplace.

Each group has been addressing sexual harassment separately and determined that this issue required policies that span beyond the confines of each individual organization. In the wake of movements like #TimesUp and #MeToo, every industry must act to create positive change and end sexual harassment.

“All the organizations came together because the ethical concerns and human rights would be better served working together, so we can stop sexual harassment from occurring in the industry,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham, IV, FASAE, CAE.

The coalition will identify tools and develop new resources to assist in educating individuals and the events industry about sexual harassment.

Carrie Abernathy, CMP, CEM, CSEP, Past-President & Co-Founder of the Association for Women in Events, and Kiki J. Fox, President & Co-Founder of the Association for Women in Events, gathered these industry leaders together for regular meetings and discussed the direction of the coalition. Fox is organizing action items and driving this initiative.

The group’s next step is to release a webinar that introduces experts on the subject matter.

“It’s imperative that our organizations present a united front against sexual harassment in the industry. Together, we are declaring zero tolerance for behavior that harasses or discriminates,” said Fox.

All nine organizations involved will be posting more details of upcoming education and initiatives around this subject to their respective website homepages. The coalition encourages the events industry to follow along and participate.

ASAE Foundation Announces Five Innovation Grants Program Award Recipients

WASHINGTON—ASAE Foundation names the five awardees for the Innovation Grants Program (IGP). Each grant recipient will receive $10,000, and they will be recognized during ASAE’s 2018 Great Ideas Conference, March 11–13, at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, CO. These grants are funded by support from the SunTrust Foundation, Whiteford, Taylor & Preston L.L.P, and GEICO.

ASAE Foundation’s Innovation Grants Program Expands to Five Grants, Applications Now Available for Associations

WASHINGTON—ASAE Foundation is accepting applications for its Innovation Grants Program (IGP) through October 1. Celebrating its sixth year, IGP is a program that provides monetary awards to support innovation exploration and development in the association community. GEICO has joined on as another supporter for the IGP.

The IGP grants are funded through a major grant from the SunTrust Foundation with additional support from GEICO and Whiteford, Taylor, & Preston L.L.P. There will be up to five grants awarded in either of three categories: travel, exploration, and hybrid (a combination of travel and exploration). Grant recipients will receive awards up to $10,000.

“The community has seen the impact of the Innovation Grant Program, and we appreciate the continued support from SunTrust Foundation and Whiteford, Taylor & Preston L.L.P. We are excited that GEICO’s donation helps us continue to support and cultivate a culture of innovation throughout the association community,” said ASAE Chair-Elect and ASAE Foundation Chair Matthew R. Shay, CAE, President and CEO National Retail Federation. “I urge our members to apply, so they can create programs that deliver tremendous results for the organization and its members.”

Individuals from professional or trade associations, nonprofits, association industry partners, and consulting companies that serve the association community are eligible to apply, and applicants or applicant teams must include at least one ASAE member. The ASAE Foundation is looking for proactive and creative ideas that help propel association management in such areas as leadership development, technology, marketing, membership and community engagement, product development, and business practices.

“Associations create programs and services that influence everything we do on a daily basis.  The ASAE Foundation strives to inform our community about the different approaches associations are using to implement projects, ideas, and services. These grants have influenced how organizations initiate and practice innovation through developing programs that are making a difference. ASAE Launched First Successful Xperience Design Project for Association and Industry Professionals

WASHINGTON, DC – ASAE delivered its newest event, Xperience Design Project (XDP), May 23-24, at the Gaylord National® Resort & Convention Center. Over the two days, XDP brought together 1,816 association professionals and industry partners. Participants collaborated together to co-create ideas and solutions on how to reinvent their meetings, networked at Connections, and had new face-to-face business experiences.

“There was tremendous energy, excitement, and teamwork happening at XDP. All participants had new experiences that provided opportunities to see first-hand how they can apply new learning formats, design and engagement elements, technology, and operational innovations into their organization’s future meetings,” said John H. Graham, IV, FASAE, CAE, President and CEO of ASAE.

On the first day, attendees experienced the Lab—an immersive, facilitated learning journey around five core topics. Participants were led by XDP’s host Lisa Kay Solomon, author, speaker and Managing Director of Singularity University, and each topic was led by prominent industry leaders.

Attendees listened to two Pop-Up talks that were designed to spur conversations in the next zone rotation. Shannon Polson encouraged attendees on how they can be a leader from any seat, and Kelly McDonald shared her wisdom on ways they can keep customers coming back for more.

On Tuesday evening, participants took part in the Connections event, a night of networking at MGM National Harbor with the B-52’s.

On day two, participants experienced four key elements: LabX, the Business Exchange, Idea Accelerators, and XDP’s Closing Experience. LabX included entertainment and a recap of the best insights from the previous day. The Business Exchange was a forum for industry partners and association professionals to have one on one meetings.

There were six Idea Accelerators, 20-minute talks, focused on solutions for association professionals that ranged from experience design mapping to incorporating wellbeing principles into an event while rethinking marketing strategies and strengthening an entrepreneurial mindset.

Throughout the conference, ASAE integrated music and performing arts as an intentional experiential element that evokes emotion and triggers memory of the event. Artists included: Live DJ Jamie, Saul Paul, a musician who co-created a song with the audience during LabX, and performance painter David Garibaldi, who created three original paintings during the Closing Experience.

ASAE’s key partners in the research, development, design, and delivery of XDP were: 360 Live Media, Hargrove, Inc.; Steelcase Event Experiences; and hotel partner Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.

ASAE, Steelcase Partner to Provide Unique Experiences at XDP

WASHINGTON—ASAE is partnering with Steelcase Event Experiences to deliver ASAE’s new event called the Xperience Design Project (XDP), May 23-24, at the Gaylord National® Resort & Convention Center in Maryland. XDP will create a collaborative learning environment for association professionals to think differently about their meetings and inspire a new era of face-to-face business experiences.

Steelcase Event Experiences is a partner in the design and delivery of the Lab portion of XDP. The Lab is on day one and is a full-day learning experience where association professionals and industry partners work side-by-side to share ideas, uncover opportunities, and tackle the most important issues impacting their business.

The Lab takes place in a hub-and-spoke format with a center stage and five Zones, each aligned as an element of the core curriculum – Experience, Learning, Location, Marketing, and Technology. Steelcase has designed and will furnish three of the five zones in the Lab, and it will showcase how an environment can elevate engagement.

“We are excited to partner with Steelcase Event Experiences for our inaugural XDP event. They are creating unique experiences with special, high-level sets in the Experience, Marketing, and Learning zones. Attendees will be able to listen, learn, network and participate in the different environments while envisioning how they can incorporate these designs in their future meetings,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. ASAE Launches New Learning, Talent Development Platform–ASAE Learning Online

WASHINGTON—ASAE has a new continuous learning and talent development platform called ASAE Learning Online. It provides on-demand access to unlimited educational opportunities for ASAE members and non-members throughout the association community.

Subscribers can personalize learning plans, take skills gap assessments, and search through hundreds of educational options that align with association management competencies (defined by ASAE’s Job Task Analysis) as well as professional skills, which are important for individual, team, and organizational effectiveness. It will also offer personalized recommendations, so participants can discover the most relevant content they need.

“ASAE Learning Online gives the association community the ability to learn at the point of need, when and where they need it, as well as understand where they are along their career path. Subscribers will be able to take self-assessments, set goals, and track all their continuing education in one place,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, FASAE, CAE. “We are very excited about this new platform for association professionals!”

ASAE Learning Online offers individual ASAE members and non-members the opportunity to purchase a monthly or annual subscription. There’s also a 7-day free subscription, a limited freemium account with five trial courses. In the Fall, ASAE Learning Online will offer organizational subscriptions, and it will have a range of talent management related features and introduce multi-course certificate programs and career bundles.

“Research shows that organizations with strong learning and talent development processes drive better business results including: more revenue, greater employee engagement, reduced staff turnover, and higher customer retention,” said ASAE’s Chief Learning Officer Rhonda Payne, CAE. “As we position ASAE to provide the best support for our members individually as well as organizationally, it is critical that we offer a variety of ways to engage and help advance this type of employee-centric learning culture.”

ASAE’s Marketing, Membership, Communications Conference Gives Association Executives Digital, Content, Branding Strategies

During ASAE’s Marketing, Membership, & Communications Conference (MMCC), May 2-3, 851 association executives and industry partners took part in 24 learning labs, three keynotes, two preconference workshops, and networked in the exhibit hall at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

“The education sessions and keynote speakers this year really resonated with our audience. They provided attendees with insight on the latest trends, advice on how to strengthen their brand, and the best strategies for marketing, membership, and communications,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham, IV, FASAE, CAE.

New this year, ASAE offered two preconference workshops on May 1. In “Strategic Talent Management for High Performing Marcomm Teams,” the six content leaders focused on culture and its impact on an association’s success in building high-performing teams. The second workshop “Membership Recruitment in the Digital Age” Shama Hyder, CEO of The Marketing Zen Group, discussed five ways organizations can grow their digital footprint and convert this to new member growth.

For the opening on May 2, there were two keynotes: Shama Hyder and Eric Kuhn, the Chief Marketing Officer at Layer 3 TV. Hyder kicked off the session saying how people are now the media and how organizations need to think about how to reach them effectively. She talked about three trends in digital marketing including: identity-based ecosystem, content curation and aggregation, and video has become device agnostic.

Kuhn discussed the best practices to bridge content and technology, utilizing the current social networks effectively, and preparing for what’s coming up next. The keys for great content include: understanding how your members use and engage with the different social media platforms, communicating the value of your association, and knowing that content needs to be compelling and tell a great story.

On May 2, ASAE also announced the 2017 Gold Circle for Overall Excellence winner — the American Society of Anesthesiologists: Protecting Safe VA Care. Here’s a full list of the 2017 Gold Circle Award winners, which is sponsored by High Roads Solution.

A keynote from William Espey, brand voice lead at Chipotle Mexican Grill, kicked off May 3. He talked about brand value and how it’s important to showcase your personality, the association’s values, and create communities that benefit your customers. He emphasized that organizations should use psychology when facing a crisis and approach it from the individual’s perspective. The organization needs to apologize, be transparent, rebuild trust, and create a process for its members to reconnect.

ASAE Announces Nilofer Merchant as Opening Keynote for 2017 ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition

WASHINGTON—Known as the “Jane Bond of Innovation,” Nilofer Merchant, a Fellow at The Martin Prosperity Institute and one of the world’s top-ranked business thinkers, will kick off the 2017 ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition, August 12–15, in Toronto.

Merchant will discuss how ideas today spread through networks, collaboration, and co-creation instead of hierarchies. She’ll also outline how the power to make a difference is not bound by status, but it’s “onlyness.”

Her talk will illustrate how association professionals, in any role or career stage, can surface powerful ideas. And, she’ll reveal the secrets she discovered while advising Fortune 500s and Silicon Valley startups on strategies to enter new markets, to defend against competitors, and to optimize revenue.

“Imagine what problems associations might solve and innovative breakthroughs that could be unlocked, if every idea had an equal opportunity, not just the ones that come from expected people and places,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Keynote Chef Jeff Henderson, Game Changer Speakers Will Inspire Attendees at the 2017 ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition

WASHINGTON—From August 12–15, ASAE is expecting close to 5,000 association professionals and industry partners to come together in Toronto for the 2017 ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition. The ASAE Annual Meeting website includes information on: featured speakers; more than 120 education sessions; preconference workshops and masterclasses; registration; hotels; events; and more, has been launched. Registration is now open.

“We are excited for this year’s meeting in Toronto. Chef Jeff Henderson, the five game changers, and education session leaders will provide attendees with inspiration, new ideas and different perspectives on a variety of association management topics and challenges they are facing,” said ASAE President & CEO John H. Graham IV, FASAE, CAE. “Participants will bring back innovative solutions to their organization. It will be fantastic.”

Jeff Henderson, an executive chef for brands like Caesars and Bellagio and the Food Network star and The New York Times bestselling author of Cooked, will be the closing keynote. He will discuss his own reinvention with take-away lessons on facing adversity and identifying one’s personal gifts. Henderson will share inspirational stories that illustrate how diversity drives organizational benefits from increased staff retention, consistency in product delivery, and teams that are more confident and productive. Henderson is presented by Keppler Speakers.

Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning, ASAE will present five game changers selected for their ability to provide diverse perspectives and revolutionary ideas from outside the association community.

  • Be the Change with Major Mary Jennings “MJ” Hegar, Executive Coach and Consultant, former pilot, Air National Guard. Major Hegar is presented by Lavin Agency.
  • Balanced Obsession: The Science of Happiness and Success by Daniel Lerner, Psychology Professor at New York University, author of U Thrive. Lemer is presented by Lavin Agency.
  • I’m Judging You: Do Better with Luvvie Ajayi, Executive Director, The Red Pump Project
  • Living out Loud with Nyle Dimarco, Deaf Activist and winner of America’s Next Top Model and Dancing with the Stars. Dimarco is presented by Keppler Speakers.
  • Be More Awesome: A Fresh Approach to Productivity with Chris Bailey, author of The Productivity Project. Bailey is presented by Speaker’s Spotlight.
